A Tribute...

One day, in 1978, my mother-in-law Dorothy England, called and asked me if I would like to go with her to Westminster College and take real estate classes. This is not a lady whose kids tell her "no"; especially if you are married to her only son. She raised four very successful children on her own, put herself through nursing school, became a nurse anesthetist, owned a Pizza Inn, and was very well respected in the community. So, I thought "what the heck, I like houses and it's not like I'm ever going to be a real estate agent."

Not long into the courses, I realized that it all made sense to me and I became intrigued with the classes. We finished up, passed the school tests and she said we should go get our real estate licenses. Whoa! This was not what I had in mind. I was going to take the classes, I enjoyed them, but that was the end. Remember, "no?" - well, I took the test. Two weeks later, much to my dismay, I got a letter from the State of Utah saying that I had passed. OK, now, this is the end!

Dorothy went to work (in her "spare" time) for ERA. She encouraged me to "just talk to a few offices." I walked into a wonderful little home that was built in the 1920's, the living room was the reception area and the 2 bedrooms were offices. It was like walking into Grandmas house - all warm and cozy and inviting; complete with a little "Grandma" Broker and 3 wonderful lady agents. Well, that was the beginning and Dorothy knew that she had me hooked on this real estate life. (Oh by the way, Dorothy quit selling when interest rates hit 20% and went on to another "adventure" in her life - even after she "retired" she spent a good deal of time in Africa helping to build hospitals and taking care of children.) She just sits back now and chuckles about all of this and says "who ever thought those little classes would lead to all of this?"

Now 26 years later, I have matured into the little ‘Grandma’ Broker – all from the suggestion of, “just come and take these classes with me.”

Dorothy has been, not only my mother-in-law and my children's Grandmother, but my critic, my mentor, my inspiration, my strength when times were really tough and most of all, my dearest friend.

Thank you Dorothy, I love you. - Bridget
